THE MIRAGE OF WINTER SPORTS

Reporting on this story for the New York Times about Beijing’s Winter Olympics bid made me realize how environmentally destructive most winter sports are. As Carmen de Jong of University of Savoy put it, these are “Martian-like” projects to transplant sports that grew up in very specific regions into new habitats.
