Going Baroque in China

I’m a big fan of Baroque music and was excited when the Beijing Music Festival decided to focus on it this year. I got a chance to hang around Christopher Hogwood, one of the pioneers of Baroque’s revival in the West and now doing similar work in the East. It was a treat to see him teach Chinese students but also sobering to see how little of the pre-Mozart repertoire is familiar here–and essentially how the western classical music boom here has fairly shallow roots. (Of course, how much classical Chinese music is practiced in the West?…)
