THE LOST DECADE?

A while ago, headline like this for a story on China’s economy would have seemed outrageous, but I think it’s more and more defensible. In this essay for the NYRB, I review a few books on China’s economy, especially James Fallows’ China Airborne and Nicholas Lardy’s Sustaining China’s Economic Growth, and come to the conclusion that China has so badly slacked off reforms for the past ten years that it’s facing a serious (but not insurmountable) problem.
