WILD GRASS OUT IN CHINESE

WILD GRASS OUT IN CHINESE

It took eight years but my book Wild Grass: Three Portraits of Change in Modern China (Pantheon 2004, Vintage 2005) is out in Chinese. Needless to say, not a mainland publisher but a Taiwanese, who said it had value for showing the underlying grassroots tensions in China today.

You can see the publisher’s page here and buy it here. Alas, the publisher gave me a new Chinese name, 伊恩‧強森, instead of good old 张彦 but I’m used to multiple personalities. I was also slightly sorry that he didn’t use the original title, which came from a Chinese author, Lu Xun, and instead went for something grabbier, but he said the publshing climate doesn’t allow for nuance. Okay….
