A CONCESSION TOO FAR?

A CONCESSION TOO FAR?

In this NYT piece, I write about surprising new develops in Sino-Vatican relations.

This includes the decision by a papal delegation to ask 2 underground bishops to resign. What I think I didn’t quite capture in the piece is that the person who brought this to light, Cardinal Zen of Hong Kong, had to travel to Rome in a personal capacity and wait in the public line to see the Pope–in other words, he’s cut so far out of the picture that he has to approach him in this fashion. Surprising developments and one wonders if a backlash in the church isn’t developing.
