THE HIGH PRICE OF THE NEW BEIJING

Here’s a review essay in the current issue of the NYRB on saving/destroying/rebuilding Olde Pekinge. The main focus of the essay is a translation of “City Record,” a key book on Beijing’s history by the journalist Wang Jun. It similar in impact to Jane Jacobs’ Death and Life of Great American Cities–a transforming book that has changed the debate in China.
