Are Chinese really as atheistic as a recent Gallup poll suggests? I take a closer look.
In this piece for the New York Times, I look at an opinion poll that received a lot of traction globally for claiming that 61 percent of Chinese were “convinced atheists.” The numbers startled me and I realized that the results probably had to do with the question, so I contacted Gallup–the rest you can read in the piece.
This follows a similar piece I did for the New York Review of Books last year on another problematic poll, by Pew.
