DENG’S HEYDAY
Thanks to Liu Kin Ming at the Hong Kong Economic Journal, I had the chance to write about my first trip to China–in 1984–and what it was like then. In this piece, I recall what a botched trip it was but how I got a sense of China changing gears and starting its dramatic rise. I also recalled how it was such a different era–before Skype, cellphones, email and so on–when it was possible to get lost in a country.
