In this article in the New York Review of Books, I review two new books on China in Africa, one by Columbia Journalism school and former New York Times correspondent Howard French, the other by freelancer Jacob Kushner. I thought both made a convincing case that China’s push isn’t necessarily part of some grand plot, but does present challenges for the often-weak countries of sub-Saharan Africa. For now the article is paywalled. It will later be free on ChinaFile.
