CHANGING HISTORY THROUGH COMICS

CHANGING HISTORY THROUGH COMICS

In this Saturday profile for The New York Times, I look at an unconventional historian–the comic book artist Sonny Liew.

Liew is one of Singapore’s most unconventional artists, mainly because he uses manga to challenge the city-state’s creation myth of being guided by a firm but fair ruler. The piece made me think of China and how historic change might happen there–perhaps by this sort of gradual development.
