I’ve been fascinated by China’s auto-cultural genocide (the willful destruction of its own culture) and efforts to reverse this. A recent trip to Datong, which is rebuilding its old city walls just a few decades after tearing them down, inspired me to write this piece for the NYRB’s blog.
