How are Chinese Catholics faring during this period of tensions between Beijing and the Vatican? In this piece for America magazine, I try to answer that complicated question.

I’ve wondered for a while why Catholicism is one of China’s slowest-growing religions and the challenges it faced. So I traveled to Dongergou, a village in Shanxi province that is also home to a famous pilgrimage site, to try to figure it out.
